dr cosmos dylan moran review
had the great pleasure of watching dylan moran (also from the magical show black books) and his amazing stand up comedy for the second time.
ive actually seen him once before in sydney - where his show was markedly more depressing than the one i watched today (the previous was OFF THE HOOK)
as always, his shows tend to be about an hour and he was definitely in lovely form when i watched him this time - and i had a great seat this time except this time i was seated next to two old men who really enjoyed the show and felt the need to repeat and comment on every single punchline to each other loudly.
he introduces the whole australian segment with some super scathing and sharp remarks on scomo, and the general gist of sydney as well, and one of my favorite lines is "god wants you to burn coal and if you don't agree you're a lesbian trying to fuck with GDP."
or
"youre just a plot twist for two people who ran out of dialogue.. now here you are full of complaints and tim tams"
retaining the same whimsical surrealist lens - one of his trademarks - whilst commenting on the shit tier happenings in the world (pence, brexit) and keeping a good eye on things like tinder, and the pervasiveness of smart phones - i personally feel it's definitely the stronger show of the two i've seen live. As his topics are usually based on recent and contemporary topics, its definitely a welcome change to get some more stuff to relate to, and unlike his last show, a more light hearted approach to the current state of the world. he does also repeat a small section from OFF THE HOOK - in regards to his wife and his marriage, such as the question about the shirt, and the past/present/future, which is a bit of a let down considering that he's had 4 years to make something new. While I don't think it was particularly one of the most memorable shows from dylan moran, I still had a lot of fun.
one notable thing that i found during this show though, is that dylan moran smiled a LOT more during this show than i ever recall him doing so in live shows, and another thing is the very interesting sobriety plot twist - instead of a customary glass of wine, he was instead sipping something out of a mug - and it was almost amusing to see how visibly entertained he was.
overall - super solid show, and definitely a fun experience and 100% worth checking out if you have opportunity to.
