i didn't watch a heap of these shows while they were airing but instead made an extra effort to clean up and catch up on some of the ones i didn't get a chance to check out while i was busy being fucking ill, but ended up finding some really fun watches.
Akuyaku Reijou Level 99: Watashi wa Ura-Boss desu ga Maou dewa Arimasen
I've definitely been on the villainess train for a while, but this is another fun show - especially with the adjustments they made to the original source material to make it feel more cohesive. Having a really no nonsense protagonist who gives no fucks being female is extremely fun, and I found myself really enjoying this the more it went on. I liked it enough to peer into the LN but I found it a little too dense to really keep going with it, but from the r/anime comments, it seems that they did a lot in the anime to try to mend the bonds between yumelia and the heroine/trio which helps a lot in making it feel a little more cozy and fun as an all around watch. also low key i love patrick. with the exception of the dragon being horrifically animated, the rest of the show is a laid back fun watch for what it is.
Bucchigiri?!
This was an anime original so I confess, I was never really expecting it to be very good, and it turned out average at best. while there were definitely interested aspects about this show, it never really ended up getting the right kind of pacing with the story they were trying to tell, and with a relatively one note cast, it really ended up being... just fine. it wasn't the worst show in the world, but with a truly unlikeable main character, and a lack of actual character or plot development, this isn't really one to recommend to anyone. at times i considered dropping it, but it's largely an inoffensive show, but it really makes me wish that more time and effort was put into making anime originals as good as something like Sk8 was.
Majo to Yajuu
Despite a sort of rocky start to this series, I ended up enjoying this a lot. I think the main duo are definitely my least favorite part of the show, but the action and plot of this show is really compelling, especially with the uncovering of some secret dangerous stuff going on in the background. Since it's based off the manga, the manga itself is relatively solid story telling, and the world building around the mages, witches and the secret events around the main duo was something I found myself really interested in, especially because every story hints at uncovering something bigger about the world they live in. It's not my usual fare (that being, complete trash), but I have to say, it's definitely worth checking out as it does get better the longer it goes for. My only gripe is that I definitely preferred the necromancer and her assistant (Phanora and Johan) as MCs because she was hella badass, but it is what it is.
Ishura
This wasn't my first pick for the season either, and I ended up completely stacking it, but fuck if this show wasn't amazing. This also isn't a show I'd usually pick, but I found it super interesting, there's definitely a range of quality across seasonal shows, and this is one of those you have to strap and and keep yourself engaged for. while i've taken to watching a lot of shows in which you can turn your brain off and every piece of information is spoonfed to you so you're never really left out the loop, Ishura demands a lot from its viewer, keeping you updated on the worldbuilding and political intrigue, while introducing a large cast and their roles in the world. I finished this one and felt incredibly drained from just how much they packed into this, and I was even more surprised when I found out that the 12 episodes we got were actually only the introduction to the larger plot (very ahiru no sora) and i love when there are opening huge arcs for shows, and indulgently slow pacing that really allows us to experience and enjoy the story. this is a story that feels expansive and massive, and I look forward to S2. i would highly recommend this as one of the stand out shows this season - it might not be for everyone, but it is good.
Himesama "Goumon" no Jikan desu
This is pretty much cute girls doing cute things with a dash of sleepy princess in the demon castle, and it's fun. the gag is the same as always, it's time for 'torture' but its just a variety of ways for them to have fun, but I won't lie, i'm a sucker for that kind of shit and I love seeing the girlies enjoying their life and being happy and eating good food. not one i'd rewatch personally, but I definitely had fun whenever i checked out an episode.
Urusei Yatsura (2022) 2nd Season
Much like the first season, I was oddly surprised at how much I've become to enjoy this show, and it truly is a compliment to this show that I've continued to watch it as much as I have. as someone notoriously bad with classics/old animation, the initial premise of this show was difficult to parse, but there's something timeless and endearing about this that I've come to appreciate over time with this show. As the original manga has already come and gone, it's unlikely i'd ever go back to read that, but I am truly thankful that we get to see an updated, revised version with gorgeous new animation, and oddly enough, i've begun to look forward to more and more of this show as time goes on. well worth checking out. i also really liked the dimension travel episodes.
Sokushi Cheat ga Saikyou sugite, Isekai no Yatsura ga Marude Aite ni Naranai n desu ga.
honestly i don't even know where to start when I talk about this show. the beginning of this show was nuts, but i saw a few people talk about how silly it was and how it reminded them of kami katsu, so i checked it out. while this show is far from the absolute godsend that is kami katsu, i can't deny it is kinda fun - it's one of those shows which doesn't take itself too seriously, and as the show goes on, it just gets more and more out of hand with just how every single event is overcome almost immediately. i didn't enjoy this much at first, but the more and more I watched this show, the more i just found it kinda stupidly funny in how it feels so lackadaisical. i can't say this is high art, neither is this stunning comedy, but is is A Show that Exists and if you want a light hearted way to burn a few hours, this is a good pick. is it weird to say i'd definitely watch a second season of this?
Loop 7-kaime no Akuyaku Reijou wa, Moto Tekikoku de Jiyuu Kimama na Hanayome Seikatsu wo Mankitsu suru
This was weirdly enjoyable. I'm really not a big romance fan at all, but this was surprisingly enjoyable for me. I've often complained about straight romances being largely suspended in a realm of disbelief due to the complete inanity of the main characters and the relatively frustrating way that relationships are established and built within their stories, but this one actually had me gripping the edge of my seat.
I really loved watching this one, i loved the personality of the main character, and i also enjoyed arnold as her love interest, and there was really just a lovely wish fulfilment aspect of the relationships developing between both that really gripped my brain. I have to say, it's definitely a guilty pleasure binge that I am glad I ended up watching - more romance like this please.
Chiyu Mahou no Machigatta Tsukaikata
I really enjoyed this one! Another late show I picked up and ended up binging, but this was such a nice and positive show. i liked that it wasn't terribly 'edgy' while like, pulling the rug up underneath the MCs, despite the slightly unorthodox beginning, but i really like the positivity of the main character, and i really loved his mentor rose, just really loved her energy. while i read ahead and the rest of the manga does drift a little away from the intial premise, i think that this was a super fun watch and would be worth checking out if you wanted a decent isekai that doesn't lean too heavily into the usual tropes.
