Tom Allen: Absolutely Live review

Playing on Channel 4 - while I missed watching Tom Allen live at the comedy festival (he sold out and I ended up having to watch David oDoherty) but I've always really enjoyed his stand up on most shows. He's been on a few panel shows, including something about movies which has been fantastic.

to be honest, i really enjoyed Absolutely Live, it's done really well and all the sections flow together with only very few repeat stories, like material he's done on Mock the Week, but was still fresh enough that I managed to actually enjoy the whole comedy special - despite how short this special is -and because he managed to draw out and really contextualized more of his jokes, it was wonderful.
also there were a few call backs I really enjoyed as well. in addition, most of his material has topics that do appeal more to me, so i may be biased in this case.

tom allen's material is very focused on his over the top theatricality, emphasizing specific words, and drawing out certain phrases and flamboyantly boosting all his material with the sheer enthusiasm and energy of his almost, manic delivery - but I actually think it works really well for this special. one of my favorite moments is his commitment to his happy birthday routine, and despite the angry repetition - one of his signature moves - it does work and pays off very well.

some of my other favorite moments include likening himself to jesus telling a sermon on the mount - laughed much more than i should have - , routines being a distraction from inevitable death but still making it cheerful, and his whole routine of primary teachers - which is relatable - which half of the material had been shown on MTW but like i said, the way he mixes in other stories to pad out those jokes that he's used before, makes it really fun to watch, in a way that makes you feel like you're watching it for the first time all over again.

overall, really loved this.
