blood sugar ed gamble review

since ed gamble's release of his stand up special, blood sugar, i finally got a chance to watch the show thanks to r/notapanelshow requests.

the show isn't bad, it opened up with a few of ed gamble's material that he's used on mock the week and other online clips, which to me isn't necessarily an issue. having to re-use material is always a bit disappointing for me because i constantly keep up to date with comedians and want to see new material, but it's not bad when they do.

i enjoy his garish all red outfit as well - very fitting with the "blood" sugar theme going on here.

the great thing about this special is that you know after all the old material has been rehashed,
that he's going to use something like a big story for the grand finale, and some new material.

Old things such as him and james acaster (and two others) getting stuck in new york - him as a "diabetic comedian" and riffing on audience banter with another type 1 diabetic about which type of insulin they use - that section which actually probably got a bigger laugh out of me than expected because he elaborates well and still delivers it well. favorites include audience interaction: richard's "act rapid.. is brilliant" and riffing off his replies - "sometimes act rapid is too rapid"

The new uncharted territory include him slamming on a sponsored dog called berry, a spin class, and a massage where he gleefully and joyfully acts out his own amusement regarding his father, two stories which were Danish 800g/Boog and his dad's white cat Matatabi.

The overall feeling of the show is a more contemporary, more audience orientated version of Greg Davies' specials - topics which are acted out in an amusing and entertaining way rather than the content itself being especially "quippy" (think frankie boyle or gary delaney) but much more "comedic" than James Acaster's more bizarre yet amusing dramatic performance of material. The loud, boisterous and infectious energy of ed gamble's comedy is easy to laugh along to, even if the content isn't particularly funny, his persistence and his own amusement (at his bassoon solo especially) gives the audience something to laugh at, because of his own enjoyment and pride at his material.

this special really cemented to me the greatness of a greg x ed gamble pair up, especially when they were touring together during greg's earlier specials (see: the bonsai tree song) but also you can look forward to more of their chemistry on taskmaster (which i cannot wait to see.)

overall, i'd say this is definitely worth a watch. it's a solid, quirky and amusing watch and great to finally see ed gamble getting some exposure.
